The career decision-making process requires that you:

Have a good idea of your interests, skills, values, personal style, and work preferences.

Explore your career options thoroughly.

Develop career goals and action plans.

Do's and Don'ts.

Making a career decision is often difficult, especially if you have many different options you wish to pursue. Here are some words of advice to consider.

There are no good or bad, right or wrong decisions. You will make the best decision with the information you have at the time.

Results of a satisfying decision do not have to be all positive. Most decisions produce both positive and negative results.

Some decisions will require you to change; other will not.

Decision-making involves some risk. You can not know all the possible results of a decision. Don't be afraid to take a chance.

Deciding doesn't always mean that you have to choose only one option.

Keep an open mind. Have confidence in your ability to make a good decision.

Trust your own judgement. You are the expert.

When in doubt, consult with others. People you are close to can provide ideas about possible alternatives as well as support and encouragement.

Be creative! Try on different hats! Use your imagination!

It is OK to decide not to make a decision.

Remember: No Decision is Written in Stone

DO's and DON'Ts

Take the time and energy to develop your career path.

Don't take a band aid approach to career planning...band aids come off in the bathtub!

Don't expect to make the perfect decision....nothing is ever perfect!

Plan for the unexpected, because it is sure to happen!

Accept responsibility for your life. Don't be an excuse-aholic!

Delete the "should's" and "supposed to's" from your career vocabulary. If you want it, just do it!

Have a good support system to help you through the difficult times. Don't be afraid to ask for help!

Know what you want in life. Go for it!

Don't assume that you are stuck with your choices for life. You have the power to make changes!

Don't forget to reward yourself for a job web done. Have fun!
