Aboriginal Population Trends

The profile of the Aboriginal population in Saskatchewan is different to that of the rest of the population. That will have significant impact on the province’s employment picture in the future.

The Aboriginal population includes all people who identified with one or more Aboriginal groups, including North American Indian, Métis and Inuit for the 1996 Census. It also includes those who reported that they were Registered/Treaty Indians or Band/First Nation members.

In 1996, 75,200 North American Indian and 36,500 Metis people lived in Saskatchewan. This made for a total Aboriginal population of 11,700, 11% of the total provincial population.
