Aboriginal Population
The average age of Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal population
is ten years younger than the rest of the population. This is
largely due to a growing Aboriginal youth population.
In the non-Aboriginal population, 35% of people are under 25
years of age. In the Aboriginal population, 60% are under 25.
Even more dramatic, 21% of the non-Aboriginal population are
under 15 years of age, compared to 42% for the Aboriginal population.
The high number of Aboriginal youth indicates there will be
a significantly greater number of Aboriginal people of an employable
age in the future.
Only 3% of Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal population was 65
years of age or older in 1996, compared to 15% of the non-Aboriginal
population.
The age differences between the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal
populations are largely due to higher birth and death rates
for the Aboriginal population.
Saskatchewan’s Aboriginal population is expected to grow
at a rapid rate. The Registered Indian population in the 15
to 64 age group will more than double over the 20 year forecast
period to 2018.

They will represent a larger share of Saskatchewan’s
working age group (15 to 64), increasing from 7% in 1998, to
11% in 2008 and to 16% in 2018.
