Employment by Industry


Since 1990, there has been a 14% increase in the number of people employed in the service-producing area and a 9% decrease in the goods-producing area.

By 2000, 72% of the employed were working in the service-producing area and 28% were in the goods-producing area.

The wholesale and retail trades industry employs the most people in the province, at 16% of the total employed labour force. Agriculture employs the second largest number, at 13%.

Employment increased in almost all industry groups in the province between 1990 and 2000. The three industries that experienced the greatest employment growth were in the service-producing area. They include:

  • Professional, scientific, technical services, management of companies, and administrative and other support services (46% employment growth)
  • Transportation and warehousing (46% employment growth)
  • Accommodation and food services (31% employment growth)
Agriculture experienced the largest decline over the past 10 years, with a 25% decline in employment. The public administration area had the second highest decline, at 12%.
