Migration Patterns
Saskatchewan has traditionally experienced a larger number of
people relocating to other provinces than there are people moving
to our province.
The economic prosperity of neighbouring provinces such as Alberta
affect the migration flows to and from Saskatchewan. The "pull"
of job opportunities elsewhere influences workers’ decisions
and will continue to do so regardless of opportunities in the
province.
In 1999 to 2000, approximately 44% of those leaving the province
were people aged 15 to 24.
A sizable inflow of people from Alberta and British Columbia
partially balances the outflow.
International Migration
Net international migration to Saskatchewan is relatively small
and remains stable as economic conditions vary.
Saskatchewan does not receive as many international migrants
as other provinces. Over the ten years from 1989/1990 to 1999/2000,
the average annual net migration to Saskatchewan was 1,640.
