Dismissal Letter

Date: January 31, 2004
To: John Employee
From: Mary Supervisor
Re: Disciplinary Action
_______________________________________________________

On June 15, 2003, you were told verbally that your rudeness to a customer was unacceptable. You were asked to be courteous to customers at all times, even if the customer was angry. On July 31, 2003, you were advised for a second time by letter that your rudeness to a customer was unacceptable. This was followed by a suspension on December 31, 2003 for rudeness to a customer once again. (This paragraph describes the disciplinary steps taken to this point.)

Today you refused to take a return from a customer, who was trying to return merchandise he received as a Christmas gift, because he did not have a receipt. You were also heard speaking very sharply to the customer, implying that he was trying to return merchandise acquired some place else. (This paragraph describes the latest incident.)

As we have indicated previously, this approach to customers jeopardizes our business relationship with this customer, with other customers in the store, and with the people that these customers may tell about the incident. It is unacceptable to deal with a customer in this manner. (This paragraph describes the impact of the incident on the business.)

This letter serves as notice that your continuing mistreatment of customers is unacceptable and that your employment with this company is terminated effective immediately. Your wages and holiday pay to date will be deposited into your bank account the next regular pay day. Your benefits will continue to be paid until the end of February 2004. No further compensation will be provided because your termination results from your continued poor performance in an essential part of the work you were employed to do. (This paragraph tells the employee that he is fired and when he will receive unpaid compensation. Note that in many cases, additional compensation would be paid as well as wages outstanding (See Labour standards).)
