Spreading the Word
Many employers avoid advertising for workers. It is often expensive and employers can get a lot of applications from people who aren’t at all right for the job.

You may be able to find better candidates through your own network of contacts. This is often called the hidden job market and includes:
Asking employees if they know of anyone who would be right for the job;

Identifying individuals that you have been impressed with in previous business contacts;

Calling colleagues in the industry; and E-mailing informal notes to groups you work with regularly, such as committees or task forces.

If you do want to hire this way, do make sure that you screen the candidates just as carefully as you would if you had advertised to the public. Make it clear to the candidates that you are asking to talk to them to see whether they are right for the job -- that it is not a done deal. Also, try to see more than one candidate, so you get some idea of the potential market.

The pros of using word of mouth to find applicants include:

It is usually simpler;

It is usually quicker;

Because the candidates have been recommended to you, you have some faith in their ability;

You can sometimes find people who wouldn’t have answered an ad.

The cons include:

You can miss good people;

Word-of-mouth recommendations are not always reliable, since they often aren’t based on a detailed knowledge of the person’s work;

You won’t know the quality of candidates there are in the job market without advertising;

You often end up with only one or two candidates and can be left in the lurch if things don’t work out with them.
