External Postings

Besides advertising the traditional way through newspapers many organizations also post or circulate descriptions of job openings on bulletin boards, and in newsletters or correpsondence files of related organizations. this is one of the best ways to find strong candidates. If you don't have a posting arrangement with related organizations, you may want to consider setting one up.

On the Internet

External postings can also be made using SaskJobs. These job postings now reach a very wide audience through the internet, are advertised on cable television, and are available by telephone.

Employers can also search resumes for potential candidates. We also link to a variety of internet work and /or resume posting services around the world. It isn't always easy to reach the candidates you need in the locations you want. Internet postings should just be one of the methods you use to search for the right candidate.

Internet advetising services fall into several categories. Employers can post vacancies and candidates reply. This kind of service probably draws the most candidates for you to consider.

Another service has employers searching for the skills they need by key word, and the candidates' resumes are provided based on that search. This means that you and potential candidates have to use the same key words to match up with each other!

Employers can also browse through resumes looking for candidates. the key in all of these services is finding enough candidates with the background you need to make the effort worthwhile.

Keep in mind that these sites are growing by leaps and bounds, so if a search doesn't work for your company today, six months from nwo the situtation could be really different

Internal Postings

Many organizations have a policy of posting a job for their own employees to bid on before it gets advertised to people outside the organization. The principle behind internal posting is that you do not always know which employees in your business are qualified for or interested in a job unless you advertise. You may also work with someone in one context and be unaware of their experience and knowledge in another area. Internal postings show employees that you are committed to them and their advancement.

Posting a job internally may have some drawbacks, though:
You may put other internal candidates through unnecessary effort and disappointment if you already have someone in mind for the job.

It may take longer to hire someone if you advertise internally and then have to advertise externally as well.

If people are always hired from inside the organization, you may miss out on getting a fresh point of view.

An alternative may be to post externally and internally, while stating that internal candidates will be given first consideration.

You will have the best results with internal postings if your company provides career development counselling on a regular basis. That way employees can find out what qualifications and experience will be needed for the jobs that interest them. The company is able to help by telling employees what kinds of jobs are likely to open up and providing them with the coaching, experience and training they may need.
